EU naval forces boarded the oil tanker MV SUN in the Mediterranean on Aug. 30 over suspicions it was sailing under a false flag in violation of international maritime law. The boarding was carried out by Operation IRINI to verify the vessel’s flag and marked the sixth suspected Russian “shadow fleet” tanker inspected by EU forces in recent months. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said action against Russia’s “shadow fleet” will be discussed when EU defense ministers meet in Ireland on Tuesday.
