The U.S. Army is seeking a next-generation surface-to-air missile capable of intercepting small drones at longer ranges, with a target cost of less than $150,000 per missile, according to Defense News. The radar-guided interceptor is intended to strike Group 2 and Group 3 drones at ranges beyond 16 kilometers, eventually exceeding 25 kilometers. The Army plans to begin prototype testing by the end of fiscal year 2027, have 50 missiles ready for operational assessment in early 2028, and ultimately produce 5,000 missiles.
