Iran’s parliamentary National Security and Foreign Policy Committee has approved provisions imposing heavy penalties on ships that violate Tehran’s rules for passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Under the proposed legislation, violators could be fined 20% of the value of their cargo, with vessels temporarily detained until the penalty is paid. The bill would also establish specialized maritime courts to handle violations. The measures still require approval by Iran’s full parliament before becoming law.
