Eight of the world’s largest shipping industry associations have urged the United Nations and the International Maritime Organization to oppose any mandatory tolls or transit charges in the Strait of Hormuz, Bloomberg reports. In a joint letter dated August 3, the groups warned that such fees could undermine the international legal framework governing navigation through international straits and set a precedent for similar charges at other major maritime chokepoints. The letter was signed by organizations including the International Chamber of Shipping, BIMCO, and the World Shipping Council.
