A federal judge in California has ruled that the Trump administration cannot deport noncitizens solely for criticizing Israel or expressing support for Palestinians, finding that the policy violates constitutional free-speech protections. The ruling came in a lawsuit involving The Stanford Daily, which argued that international students had been afraid to speak publicly because of the threat of deportation. The judge struck down portions of the federal deportation provisions and ruled that noncitizens are protected by the First Amendment.
