U.S. Central Command says American forces disabled the steering gear of the Panama-flagged M/V Vela Nova after the vessel ignored repeated warnings and attempted to sail toward an Iranian port in violation of the U.S. blockade. A U.S. Navy MH-60 helicopter fired two Hellfire missiles into the ship’s engine room, stopping it from continuing toward Iran. CENTCOM says that since the blockade was reinforced, U.S. forces have redirected 55 commercial vessels, disabled three and boarded two to enforce compliance.
