A new study finds that the NYPD's sharp rise in high-speed chases didn't lower crime but did lead to more crashes. Chases jumped 25-fold in 2022, from about eight a month to 200, and researchers linked that to roughly 675 extra crashes, 355 injuries and seven deaths. A third of those hurt or killed weren't the people fleeing. The NYPD has said about two-thirds of its chases started as simple traffic stops.
