UK: MI5 chief Sir Ken McCallum has warned that Iran is stepping up hostile operations in Britain, including threats against Jewish communities and military installations. In his annual security briefing today, McCallum said more than 50 people had been arrested in the UK over the past year in connection with MI5’s investigations into Iranian threats. McCallum also raised concerns about terrorists exploiting artificial intelligence to plan attacks, saying MI5 had already caught extremists using AI to improve their reconnaissance and attack methods, including the use of AI-enabled drones. He said his greatest concern was extremist groups using AI to develop biological weapons. Although the threat had “not yet realised”, he warned the technology had the potential to transform the danger posed by bioweapons. McCallum also described Russia as Britain’s leading foreign security threat, warning that hostile state activity had quadrupled over the past decade.
