UK: A former bodyguard of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was reportedly granted asylum and later British citizenship before being accused of plotting terrorist attacks against Jewish and Israeli targets in Europe. The man reportedly served in Haniyeh’s security detail after Hamas won the 2006 Palestinian elections and later moved to Britain, where he was granted asylum. At the time, Britain had proscribed Hamas’s armed wing as a terrorist organisation, but not its political wing, which Haniyeh led. Hamas was only proscribed in its entirety in the UK in 2021. The man was reportedly living in Britain as an IT consultant when he became involved in an alleged Hamas plot targeting Jewish community centres, Israeli diplomats and pro-Israel demonstrations in Germany and Austria. His identity cannot currently be reported by British media because of a court order relating to separate criminal proceedings.
