UK: Andy Burnham has announced that VAT on household electricity bills will be scrapped from 1 October, in his first major policy announcement as prime minister. The move is expected to reduce the annual Ofgem price cap by around £45 and will cost an estimated £850m. Burnham said it would be funded by scrapping the previous government’s £1.8bn digital ID programme. The prime minister said the measure would “put more money in people's pockets and bring back hope”. Small businesses eligible for domestic energy VAT relief, as well as charities and residential care homes eligible for the reduced rate, will also benefit.
