City Council members are pressing the Mamdani administration for action on New York City’s housing shortage, with new city data showing the residential vacancy rate at just 1.4%. Officials say half of NYC renters now spend more than one-third of their income on rent, while more than 57,000 rent-stabilized apartments are currently being kept off the market. The Council is reviewing the mayor’s housing plan as lawmakers push for additional steps to increase the city’s available housing supply.
